It’s Award Season – Time for a Quiz

It’s January, so it must be awards season.  I watched one such show and noted once again the connection to books.  Lots of biographies this year.  That made me wonder.  What films are based on mysteries?   After a bit of research, I recognized some but not all.  It seems like the trend of changing the name of the film from the name of the book died out at some point.  Likely since marketing both under the same name makes more sense.   Still there were enough that I thought would fill out a short quiz – and we haven’t done that in a while.  Time to test your knowledge:

For Round One, here’s the challenge – do you know what books these films are based on?  All are older films or remakes.

Films:

  1.  No Way Out – 1987
  2. Along Came a Spider – 2001
  3. That Darn Cat – 1965
  4. Tony Rome – 1967
  5. Dressed to Kill – 1941
  6. The Case of the Black Cat (1936)

Books:

A.  Undercover Cat by Gordon and Mildred Gordon
B. Miami Mayhem by Marvin H Albert
C. Death Takes No Bows by Richard Burke
D.  The Big Clock by Kenneth Fearing (1946)
E.  Kiss the  Girls by James Patterson – the film is a sequel to the first film of the same name
F.  The Case of the Caretaker’s Cat by Erle Stanley Gardner

Round Two is for more current films – do you know who the author is for the book with the same name:

Film/Book:

  1. Presumed Innocent
  2. L. A. Confidential
  3.  I, the Jury
  4.  The Fourth Protocol
  5. Anatomy of a Murder
  6.  Gone Baby Gone

Author:

A.  Frederick Forysth
B.  Robert Traver
C.  Scott Turow
D.  James Ellroy
E.   Mickey Spillane
F.  Dennis Lehane

And the bonus round is for the current biopics – what book was the film based on or pertains to the main character?  These may be a little harder since they are outside the mystery genre but some are give-ways due to the author’s  name.  Still, I thought it would still be fun to know for the ones that don’t have the exact same title as the movie.

Films:

  1. The Theory of Everything
  2. Selma
  3. The Imitation Game

Books:

A.  Death of a King by Tavis Smiley
B.  Alan Turing: The Enigma
C.  Traveling to Infinity by Jane Wilde Hawking

And the Answers:

Round One:

1 is D

2 is E

3 is A

4 is B

5 is C

6 is F

Round Two:

1 is C

2 is D

3 is E

4 is A

5 is B

6 is F

Bonus Round:

1 is C

2 is A

3 is B

So how did you do on these?  I thought some  were easier than others. Still, it’s fun to challenge ourselves.
